Disney in Talks to Develop Orlando Area 55+ Community
Word on the street is that The Walt Disney Company is in talks with Tavistock Development Company to partner in an age restricted community at Tavistock’s Sunbridge development near Orlando.
Now, Del Webb is already building a 55+ community in SunbridgeBut the idea of having multiple 55+ communities within the same master planned development is not new.
Tradition and Lakewood Ranch are two examples that come to mind that have been successful with this.
As the most popular retirement community in the world, The villages (also in Central Florida) has long been referred to (unofficially) as “Disney World for Adults”, but it seems Disney wants to try and create “The True Disney World for Adults ”.
I know there are many Disney fans at The Villages and I’m sure even those who aren’t big Disney fans have to do the occasional mandatory trip when grandkids / family come to town so this new community might be a more convenient option for them and others like them. .
The Villages is just over an hour from Walt Disney World and Orlando International Airport.
Sunbridge is only 25 minutes from Disney and 15 minutes from Orlando International Airport.
While no community will match the breadth and depth of amenities that The Villages offers residents, a community like this would only have to offer the Right comforts for him Right group of people to be successful.
It wouldn’t be Disney’s first attempt at a community here in Florida. They participated in the early stages of celebration development, and are currently developing golden oak, a community of luxurious single-family homes adjacent to Walt Disney World.
Golden Oak residents have access to a good list of Disney benefits such as park and special event tickets, VIP tours, transportation service between the parks and the community, Disney-themed Christmas decorations throughout the community, and more.
Similar benefits would be attractive to retirees considering a Disney-themed age-restricted community.
The idea of a well-loved brand partnering in a 55+ development is not new. Just look at the success of Jimmy Buffett and Minto Development with Latitude Margaritaville.
Once again, Tavistock and Disney are in the “talking” stage, but if this happens, it could be very interesting.
I think there are enough Disney fans for 55+ that this community could be a massive hit if they decide to move on.
